Silver net for protection against contamination in drinkers (up to 15 liters)
IMPORTANT: Only for use with plastic and stainless steel drinkers! Must not be used in normal metal drinkers, as they would corrode (rust).
The silver net consists of silver balls (<1% silver with pure silver ions without additives such as chlorine, minerals, etc.), securely enclosed in a plastic housing (4,4x2,9x1,5cm). Simply place it in the water of the drinker.
In automatically adjusted dosages, silver ions are released into the water, effectively protecting against contamination and biofilm formation, keeping the water fresh. With each refill, the new water is automatically treated with silver ions for preservation. The water remains fresh for up to 6 months - more than sufficient for our application in animal husbandry.
One silver net is sufficient for drinkers up to 15 liters (use more silver nets for larger drinkers). In total, it can protect 1.900 liters of water. For a 15l drinker, the silver net lasts for 126 complete refills - for a 5l drinker, 380 refills - for a 2l drinker, 950 refills. However, the silver net should be replaced after 1 year - at the latest after 2 years - even if the 1.900 liters have not yet been reached.
This product originated in the camping sector and is also used for drinking water there. It is classified as a biocide by law, and it is warned that it is very toxic to water organisms. But exactly this (killing of contaminating water organisms) is the purpose of this product.
Manufacturer's application instructions
Preparation / Cleaning
Only use in clean fresh water systems. Clean and disinfect your fresh water system at least once a year...
Insertion
Rinse the silver net briefly with lukewarm water before use...
Filling & Function
Now fill your fresh water tank so that the free oxygen in the water (O-) can dissolve the silver ions (Ag+) from the silvered surface of the SilverPearls into the water. Water movement and natural concentration balance then ensure the transport of silver ions to every corner of the fresh water system. The silver net is self-dosing and automatically regulates the free silver ion concentration in the water until saturation. This effectively preserves the water and significantly reduces biofilm formation.
Ingredients
>99% polymers; <1% Ag (silver; solid)

Additional notes on the effectiveness of silver
SILVER AND ITS HISTORY
Thousands of years ago, people were already aware of the special properties of silver. For example, it was considered essential by Alexander the Great to carry the drinking water required for various campaigns in silver containers to ensure its purity. Records from that time already describe the magical, healing properties of silver. Today, it is seen in a more pragmatic light - speaking now of silver and its antimicrobial effect as a result of the oligodynamic effect. In drinking water, silver ions (Ag+) have a microbicidal (germ-killing or germ-inhibiting) effect. This makes it possible to preserve drinking water and protect it from re-contamination over the long term.
WHAT ACTIVE INGREDIENTS ARE USEFUL FOR PRESERVATION?
In the case of silver, it is the positively charged silver ions that dock onto microorganisms (e.g., pathogens like Legionella, E. coli, etc.) and disrupt their metabolism in over 30 different mechanisms, leading to cell death. They have microbial activity and a unique long-term effect unlike any other substance on the market. Products based on chlorine or hydrogen peroxide, for example, cannot be "bound" in water, evaporate, and are therefore unsuitable for preservation.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRESERVATION AND DISINFECTION?
Preservation refers to preventing the multiplication of microorganisms over a longer period of time. However, this requires water of drinking quality. Disinfection assumes a high microbial load in the water, which is reduced by the addition of disinfectants to make the water potable.
WHAT LIMIT VALUES ARE REGULATED ACCORDING TO DRINKING WATER REGULATIONS?
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a maximum silver ion concentration of 0,1 mg silver (100 μg) per liter of drinking water, which has been agreed upon internationally. In Germany, silver has not been listed in the Drinking Water Ordinance since the end of 2017 (previously, the permissible addition was also 100 μg/l). However, this does not mean that silver may no longer be used outside public water supply companies.
The European standard EN 15030 (in Germany: DIN EN 15030) deals with water preservation. Here, only silver ions are referred to when it comes to water preservation.
IS SILVER IN DRINKING WATER HEALTH-RELATED CONCERN?
Firstly, to date, no scientific study has reported harmful effects on the human organism at the aforementioned concentrations.
Extract from BfR Federal Institute for Risk Assessment - Opinion No. 024 of 28 Dec. 2009:
"The BfR has also considered an unrealistic worst-case assumption, where a consumer drinks 2 liters of water from small systems daily from their first to 70th year, using up the permissible maximum silver concentration of 0.080 mg/l (80 μg). The BfR concluded that [...] there are no health concerns."
Also, cities like Atlanta, Denver, or New York have a natural silver content of 200 - 300 μg/l without any adverse effects on the health of the affected population.
